Why ‘Every Child Counts’ is using Lesson Study – Louise Matthews, Head of Every Child Counts explains.

‘Lesson Study enables the Numbers Count Teacher and the class teachers to work collaboratively and to learn from each other as elements of the Numbers Count Approach are extended to whole class practice.’ Louise Matthews, Head of Every Child Counts

‘Every Child Counts’ and ‘Numbers Count’?
‘Every Child Counts’ is a programme run by Edge Hill University on a not-for-profit basis with support from England’s Department for Education. It helps primary schools to raise mathematical achievement for all children and trains a specialist ‘Numbers Count’ teacher in each school in the programme. ‘Numbers Count’ is a specialist teacher-led intervention which forms the core content of Every Child Counts. It has transformed mathematical attainment for the very lowest achieving children in Y1 (6 year olds) to Y3 (8 year olds). So far 27,000 children who were initially struggling with mathematics have made an average of 15 months progress during only 3 months of the Numbers Count intervention to get back on track.

Numbers Count Teachers also raise standards in mathematics across the whole school and we are currently developing the use of Lesson Study to support them in this wider role as the ‘in-house’ specialist in teaching and learning of mathematics across the 5 – 11 age range.

Lesson Study in Every Child Counts
Lesson Study is compatible with a constructivist approach to Professional Development used in Numbers Count. We worked with Pete Dudley to develop training materials based upon the LSUK Handbook (available on this site). Using the LS approach, the Numbers Count Teacher works with other class teachers on an aspect of their teaching, which they jointly identify as one that is likely to have an impact on an area of need in their pupils’ learning. LS enables the Numbers Count Teacher and the class teachers to work collaboratively and to learn from each other as elements of the Numbers Count Approach are extended into whole class practice.

High quality Lesson Study produces learning for the pupils, class teachers and the Numbers Count Teacher and develops a strong learning community which improves the whole school.
