Haiyan Xu

Prior to coming to the UK, Haiyan was a primary school teacher and regional/national teaching awards winner in China. During that professional phase, Haiyan was routinely involved in lesson study work for a range of school and curriculum development purposes.

Haiyan later extended her interest in lesson study academically in contexts of an MPhil at the University of Cambridge and a Doctorate at the University of Leicester. During this time, Haiyan further studied models and variations of lesson study that were practised worldwide. She specifically investigated the role of talk as a mediating tool in teacher collaboration and learning through lesson study. This research led to her theorization of CRIC (critical, reflective, interpretative and co-constructive) talk, a type of talk found fruitful for maximizing learning outcomes for teachers working as lesson study groups.

Most recently, Haiyan has been working alongside Pete and Jean to successfully develop and sustain lesson study based teacher communities in various London boroughs. Building upon this work, Haiyan is keen to share her knowledge and experience of lesson study and support teachers and schools in the UK who are interested in either introducing lesson study for the first time or taking it to the next step.

Haiyan is based in Cambridgeshire with her husband and a cat. Please use the form below to contact her.
