Supporting Mathematics through lesson study
The Camden New Curriculum Higher Order Mathematics Lesson Study project’s overall aim was to develop a self-sustaining Lesson Study community of high-order mathematics teachers and Lead Professionals to prepare for and teach the new curriculum, guaranteeing that every pupil capable of attaining higher order mathematics skills could progress to become an excellent mathematician.
The project which began in October 2013 and ended in September 2015 reached over 300 teachers and senior leaders from almost 100 schools in Camden and across London engaged in the Lesson Study process with a focus on improving teaching and learning in the New Curriculum maths.
‘We have found that the children value the opportunity to talk and discuss what they are learning, including the strategies they are using…having the opportunity to talk through their understanding and reasoning.’
The LB Camden was awarded further funding through the Subject Knowledge Hubs programme.
The final report on the project noted the following impact:-
Although funding for the hubs has now ended, a sustainability plan has ensured that they are still in place and dates of events, resources and case reports will be available soon.
