Launch of an Early Years Lesson Study project in London and the Early Years LS handbook.

EYFS3

Over 50 practitioners from schools and Children’s Centres came together at the Thomas Coram Centre in Camden on the 17th September for a workshop to launch a project aimed at improving outcomes for children,  through collaborative setting based research using Lesson Study. The pictures on this page show participants at the workshop, as well as Bernadette Duffy, (headteacher of Thomas Coram Centre), with Catherine Lewis from the USA, who visited the Centre to talk about her work in Japan with practitioners in the Early Years.

Specific objectives of the project are to:

  • Increase practitioners’ understanding of and confidence in using the ‘Characteristics of effective learning.’
  • Enhance early years practitioners’ teaching skills particularly in promoting children’s creativity and critical thinking.
  • Develop a sustainable model of practitioner development and partnership which will support children’s learning, particularly those from disadvantaged groups.

The project will take place over the coming academic year and will be supported by colleagues from the Institute of Education and from Camden LA.

The Lesson Study handbook has been modified for practitioners in the Early Years and version 1 is available to download from this site.

We would be very interested to hear from colleagues who are also carrying out LS in Early Years settings. Please get in touch and let us know about your projects.
